Session Description

Start the school year organized, efficient, and ready to serve students from day one. This practical session will demonstrate how school-based speech-language pathologists can use artificial intelligence (AI) as a planning and organizational tool during the critical back-to-school season. Topics explored will include caseload organization, calendar organization, creating supportive documents, and including caseload organization, therapy planning, communication, documentation support, and resource development. Participants will learn how to craft effective prompts, evaluate AI-generated content, and integrate AI tools into their workflows responsibly. Attendees will leave with actionable strategies and ready-to-use prompts to help streamline preparation for a successful school year. 

Learner Outcomes 

By the end of this session, participants will be able to: 

1. Apply ethical and professional considerations when using AI-generated content, including maintaining student confidentiality, verifying accuracy, and exercising clinical judgment.

2. Identify at least three practical applications of AI tools that can support back-to-school preparation and service delivery in school-based speech-language pathology. 

3. Describe effective strategies for researching an employer’s culture, caseload averages, and support systems prior to an interview. 

Risks and Benefits 

Risks: Individuals are responsible for reviewing AI generated content for accuracy, appropriateness, or compliance with district policies. Not all AI tools are HIPAA/FERPA compliant and discretion is required to ensure student confidentiality. 

Benefits: Participants will gain practical strategies for using AI to streamline back-to-school planning tasks, including caseload organization, scheduling, calendar management, and workflow development. By reducing administrative burden and improving organization, SLPs may increase efficiency, enhance compliance with timelines and deadlines, and devote more time to direct student services. 

Speaker: Caitlin Francis, M.S. CCC-SLP 

Biography: Caitlin Francis, MS, CCC-SLP is a practicing school-based speech-language pathologist with clinical expertise in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), functional communication and community-based instruction, and neuroaffirmative therapy approaches. She has served Irvine Unified School District as an AAC Specialist, PLC Lead, Assessment Support, and treating clinician for secondary students. In addition, she is passionate about clinical supervision, mentorship, and interprofessional collaboration and is a clinician supervisor for Chapman University's All About Communication Camp. Caitlin has presented at the state and national levels on topics related to assessment, neuroaffirmative practices, interprofessional collaboration, assessing special populations, and school-based issues. She currently serves as the CSHA Continuing Education Administrator and Chair of the CSHA School-Based Committee.
